The Breeders Cup juvenile races have now been run. The AntePoster suggested a total of five wagers for these Day 1 races. How did they fare?
In short, dismally in terms of race-day performance, in marked contrast to their price movements.
Juvenile Turf Sprint
Ecoro Sieg (advised at 13/2, started 5/2 favourite)
This Japanese colt proved extremely popular in the betting and shortened to outright favouritism in the 48 hours leading up to the race. But AntePoster followers didn’t get any sort of run from him. He was slightly squeezed out and lost position after the start, then again slightly hampered later in the race. Finished in mid-pack (8th of 12).
Governor Sam (advised at 16/1, started 8/1)
Showed good early speed and led until the last 50 yards, before tiring. Finished 3rd of 12, but as he wasn’t advised as an each-way bet that wasn’t much good to AntePoster followers.
Juvenile Fillies (dirt)
Non Compliant (advised at 10/1, shortened to 5/1 at time of withdrawal)
Scratched 48 hours before the race following an unsatisfactory PET scan carried out by Del Mar vets.
Juvenile Fillies Turf
Thought Process (advised at 16/1, started 9/2 second favourite)
The selection’s jockey took her straight to the lead and set extremely fast fractions for the distance (45.37 seconds for the first half mile, almost a second faster than the Juvenile Turf later on the card). She led into the straight and duly collapsed like a house of cards, finishing 9th of 14.
Juvenile (dirt)
Chancer McPatrick (advised at 8/1, started 9/4 second favourite)
The trio of Bob Baffert horses took control of the race and slowed the pace to a crawl (first half mile was run almost three seconds slower than the equivalent dirt race for the fillies). As is typical in such situations, the front pair duly finished one-two. However, the selection – who finished a non-threatening 6th of 9 – disappointed beyond that race flow, as the outsider of the field was behind him most of the way and closed well to grab third.
